Diagnostic and predictive tests in infections
Diagnosis of bacterial infections still relies heavily on the identification of the main infecting specie. However, biofilms are involved in many severe and difficult to cure infections. And within given bacterial species, different strains display highly different biofilm forming capacities.
Therefore, evaluating the biofilm forming behavior during the early stages of infection can be a predictive tool for the severity of the rising infection and can orient treatment. This hypothesis, if validated, would open the route to untapped diagnostic markets. Because early biofilm diagnostic has the potential to reduce high hospitalization costs, and in some cases disastrous and costly complications, biofilm diagnostics will create high value propositions to the doctors and to the healthcare payers.
At BioFilm Control we have developed the technology and the service that will make the difference.
Our unique BioFilm Ring Test ® technology gives information on:
- How the bacteria condition the surface
- How fast the biofilm is forming
- Physical-chemistry interactions between the bacteria and surfaces of different nature
Besides, the BioFilm Ring Test ®:
- Gives answers fast
- Is easy to operate manually
- Can be fully automated
In collaboration with a clinical partner, we already identified a “biofilm fingerprint” for bacteriuria, which could result in a high value diagnostic test to reduce the risk of preterm labor due to pyelonephritis, besides more general urinary tests, for instance for the elderly population.
In other words, our technology gives a “biofilm fingerprint” of the bacteria, which is a totally new biomarker source of high clinical value.
